Well, I thought that "Torch" was a worse problem. In "Nagisa's" case, the point of using her theme in that scene was to elicit memories of Nagisa from the reviewer and make us, the viewer, realize the gaping void in Tomoya's life.

You know the impact of this song on the scene did kind of kill it due to its happy nature. But for those clannad fans it fit in pretty well, it personified Nagisa's feelings. And I can see what the creator's of Clannad were trying to do, since there are a lot of clannad fans who do in fact cry when they watch this show (i cry sometimes as well) putting in something with a happy tone makes it easier for people to take in. With its melancholic tone, it is both sad and yet happy.

Actually I heard that thought being tossed around the AnimeSuki forums quite a bit and I largely agree with that sentiment. The most appropriate way to end this particular episode was to play the "Dango Daikazoku" ED from season 1 just to drive that point even harder. Special events like what happened in episode 16 call for a special ending and I'm with you in thinking that they should have used something other than "Torch."

Did you find the ED song more than a little inappropriate like I did? Wish they would have gone without an ED or done a special one for the episode.

@ETERNAL
Tell me about it. I just got through watching episode 18 and that burst of music when Tomoya goes face to face with Ushio in the field of sunflowers really hammered the sheer beauty of the moment. Clannad's definitely got some great music, but like you said, the way the music and the scenery flows in tandem is what makes the experience feel so extraordinary.

Not much that I can say other than that your analysis is excellent. The music in Clannad is incredible to begin with, and the effect of playing a song like that over such a heart wrenching scene was extraordinary.

The entire thing is "Nagisa~ Farewell at the Foot of a Hill" it's on the OST and starts out with the standard "Nagisa" theme and transitions about halfway through to a repeating parallel theme.

@Taka: I listened to that segment again and you are absolutely correct on both counts.

The piece that plays is indeed "Nagisa~ Farewell at the Foot of a Hill" and I particularly found your thoughts to be spot on in describing the effect that the piece has upon that scene. I'd even go as far to say that the single playthrough of that segment from "Nagisa" and the subsequent repeating rhythm is a symbol of the ephemeral nature of their relationship, and that their happiness simply couldn't last.

I think the actual song used was Nagisa~ Farewell at the Foot of a Hill. Which while starting out as the same theme repeats a new musical phrase for almost half the song. I think something can be said for it's inclusion. The repetition serving to display each tableau of the time spent between Nagisa and Tomoya. Which starts out kind of muddled at first but gradually takes the center stage harpsichord enters yet again. Paralleling the Nagisa theme. The fadeout as a opposed to the full stop in Nagisa's theme makes this version even more fleeting to some extent.

And you thought that "Toki wo Kizamu Uta" was already pretty melancholic. That song pretty much hinted at this scene and even though you're prepared for it, it's still hits you pretty hard.

And definitely agree, I don't think "Dango Daikazoku," "Nagisa," and "Chiisana Tenohira" will ever sound the same to me again. It's hard to dissociate those two pieces from this scene and listening to it will only conjure up memories of this moment.

I think the optimism of "Nagisa" also came from Nagisa's favorite song "Dango Daikazoku"...which has the same melody as "Nagisa". That melody has this happy yet melancholic feeling behind it thanks to these two songs.

After episode 16, "Dango Daikazoku" will also sound a bit melancholic to me...
