BGM Music Quiz – Set #1
Normally, I will have had a review of something up by now, except this week was hardly a normal week for me with grad school applications taking up a large chunk of my time (mostly the essay writing) and that leaves me with a case of writer’s block as far as writing music reviews go. Besides, there’s another project that I’ve been working on that I’ll discuss at length down the road. It’s still in the development stage though, but once it rolls out, it’ll impact this site as well as a few others by its nature.
Either way, what’s an anime music blog without some anime music from time to time? As a fun little diversion, I figure that I’ll showcase a few select tracks in the form of a “guess the anime from the track” post which, judging from the blog presentation, means that it can be a collaborative effort and more interactivity is never a bad thing. Note that these picks don’t represent my all-time favorite tracks or anything like that nor do I expect the difficulty to be all that high. Nevertheless, I do hope that you enjoy listening to them as you try to identify the anime series.
(Tracks will be between 30 seconds to 1 minute long.)
Track 1 | [audio:1Guess1.mp3] |
---|---|
Track 2 | [audio:1Guess2.mp3] |
Track 3 | [audio:1Guess3.mp3] |
Track 4 | [audio:1Guess4.mp3] |
Track 5 | [audio:1Guess5.mp3] |
As an apology, I’ll dive a bit in-depth into these tracks when I post the answers up on Monday, February 16. That should give people ample time to identify the tracks. Feel free to comment on the music in the meantime and let’s hope that this doesn’t become a regular feature. :p
I DO believe the first track is from Big O, it may be Stoning? But after taking a few listens, the orchestral arrangement is far more complex than the music from Big O.
Track 2 is definitely from Aria. I just don’t have the song name down, I will look it up when I have the chance.
The last three tracks although sound familiar, is lost to me.
Great fun, and great music too.
Track 1 – no clue. reminds me of gankutsuo for some reason
Track 2 – no clue. Aria maybe?
Track 3 – instinct would have said baccano but i have that ost and don’t recognize this song… so no clue
Track 4 – no clue.
Track 5 – sounds very kajiura and made me think kara no kyoukai, though it can’t be from either of the first 2 movies. no clue.
i r winnar?
I only recognised the second song…
Natsu Tayori from Aria. I forgot which soundtrack though.
To everyone: looks like all of you managed to nail the ARIA track and I can’t say that’s a surprise since that melody is fairly recognizable. Everyone wins! At least, for that track. :p
@sung gyu
I actually have not listened to the Big O soundtrack, but I can definitely see why you would think that (consider this a hint of sorts). Naturally, that does make me curious as to how good the Big O soundtrack is and whether it’s worth my time to explore.
Also, I think you’ve seen the show from which track 4 originates.
@digitalboy
For all the awesomeness that was Gankutsuou in terms of plot and characters, I thought the soundtrack was somewhat lackluster. Same goes for Baccano, which doesn’t have quite the flair that this soundtrack does. I can see why you’d guess the way you did on those.
I will say that the last one doesn’t have quite the Kajiura feel. Not enough synth/electronica nor does it feel like the work she did for Xenosaga III.
@rlime
Yup, nailed down the source and the track title!
Track 1: Evangelion, perhaps? I think I remember it from when 01 was holding White-Haired Boy.
Track 3: Darker Than Black?
Track 4: On the tip of my tongue! Blood+ maybe?
Track 5: Eureka 7?
Well, I have no idea about any of them, but it was worth a shot.
Track 1: Gunslinger Girls. Loved the soundtrack. Might be one of my all-time favourite OST’s.
Track 2: Aria of course. Choro Club ist guud.
Track 3-5: No idea, but I’d REALLY like to know what track 3 is. I love me some big band sounds. =)
Well, track 5 is the only one that I think I’ve heard, but I can’t pin down where. The first 15 seconds of it seem very very familiar. I want to say Code Geass, but the vocals that come in later make that seem unlikely.
@Omisyth
I think that I’m definitely misjudging the difficulty of this 🙁 Not a bad guess for #3 (I actually need to listen to DtB’s OST, though I heard that Kanno’s somewhat lackluster with that one, but I’ll still give it a shot nonetheless) and #4 because that definitely sounds like a theme that Mancina would use. Alas, that’s not it.
@nckl
That makes two of us with regards to Gunslinger Girl. Toshihiko Sahashi seems like an underrated composer in that no one really talks much about him despite his prolific works with the Gundam franchise and FMP.
Also, #3 shall be revealed in due time!
@Nazarielle
You’re close. Ohhhh so very close. Ridiculously so I might add. If only you knew… :p
I fail…the only one that sounds familiar is the second track.
First two were obvious (GSG and ARIA). Drawing blanks on the others, but the fifth sounds very familiar.
@Sorrow-kun
Well, your MAL profile indicates you haven’t seen it yet (unless you haven’t updated it yet), but you have certainly seen (heard?) other works that this composer has composed for. I haven’t actually listened to the un-aforementioned other works of his so I cannot confirm whether his style is similar across his body of work, but I am interested in finding out if that’s the case.
To everyone else: even though you might not have been able to discern the series from the track, I hope that you still found the ones on here to be an enjoyable listen. 😛
Indeed, if only I knew, I could go to sleep :p
Gah, it’s still bugging me, because it could be possibly anything, including something I haven’t seen. But still I get an image of someone staring at a city in ruins due to some sort of battle that took place in its midst. Although I’m having trouble figuring out how I’m close, unless it really is from Geass, but still, the vocals at the end make me think it can’t be Geass.
“Well, your MAL profile indicates you haven’t seen it yet (unless you haven’t updated it yet)”
Unlikely.
“but you have certainly seen (heard?) other works that this composer has composed for. I haven’t actually listened to the un-aforementioned other works of his so I cannot confirm whether his style is similar across his body of work, but I am interested in finding out if that’s the case.”
Much more likely, which probably explains the familiarity. Now I have to figure out what composer this is, and which works had a similar style of soundtrack, which is going to be difficult, since I’m drawing blanks. May as well stab in the dark. Is “Joe Hisaishi” close at all?
@Sorrow-kun
Just sayin’ because after I wrote my review for Emma I didn’t see it on your list and I was pretty sure you’d seen it too. :V
See Nazarielle’s stab in the dark. His stabbing is very much on target on two counts. One count is very obvious, the other count isn’t quite as much, but it deserves a mention anyhow. 😛
Bah, I give up. I’m pretty sure if it was Geass, I’d recognize it immediately. The fact that you say I’m close means it’s probably the same person, but I doubt I’ve seen whatever else they worked on anyway 😐

track 1 – gunslinger girl (Sahashi Toshihiko)
track 2 – aria the animation (choro club)
track 5 – planetes (nakagawa koutarou)
3 and 4, not something I’ve heard before =/.
